Milestones since 1880

2007
The official ceremony on 11 January 2007 launches the Foundation’s 125-year anniversary.

The vision of the Careum campus as a place of learning and research for the healthcare professions, where these professions already network during training, is realised.

2006
The Foundation adopts a new strategy, whereby it sees itself as the supporter of innovative educational projects for training in the healthcare sector.

2005
The service agreement on the management of the training centre for healthcare professions is concluded with the Canton of Zurich. The Careum Training Centre Zurich («Careum Bildungszentrum Zürich») is set up in collaboration with Kalaidos, Neumünster and the Eleonorenstiftung.

The Careum publishing house is established with the aim of publishing teaching material for the healthcare professions.

The second phase of the construction project is completed and the two residencies on Pestalozzistrasse, comprising 32 apartments and 90 parking spaces, are occupied.

2004
The new curriculum for the vocational nursing school (“Höhere Fachschule Pflege”) is presented. The Foundation is given a new image and renamed «Careum».

The first phase of the construction project is completed and the DN II school and the Careum medical library of the University of Zurich move into the new school premises, «Careum 1».

2003
Construction on the property is commenced. The property will serve as the basis for the competence centre for training in the healthcare sector.

2000
With the educational training project and the decision to redesign and reconstruct the original property, the vocational nursing school (“Berufsschule für Pflege”) is taken in a new direction.

1997
The Red Cross Hospital is closed.

1956
The foundation is again renamed and is now called the Zurich-Fluntern Red Cross Nursing School and Hospital (“Schwesternschule und Krankenhaus vom Roten Kreuz Zürich-Fluntern").

1888
The institute becomes a foundation and is renamed the Fluntern Red Cross Nursing School (“Krankenpflegerinnanstalt Schwesternhaus zum rothen Kreuz in Fluntern").

1882
Institute for nursing is opened.

1880
The Reverend W. Bion, President of the Zurich Association of Free Christians (“Zürcherischer Verein für freies Christentum”), requests the establishment of a nursing institute.
