Careum, the foundation for healthcare professions, originally known as the Zurich-Fluntern Red Cross Nursing School and Hospital (“Stiftung Schwesternschule und Krankenhaus vom Roten Kreuz Zürich-Fluntern”), looks back over a 125-year history of care.
The impressive progress made in technology, science and business, but also in relation to ideological issues, have had a profound impact on the Foundation. Developments in medical knowledge and technology have also influenced the way in which courses in this area are structured and taught.
The one thing that has remained – and will remain – unchanged is the Foundation’s goal: to provide a type of training which focuses on the needs of the working world, the market and the trainees (transfer efficiency, practical relevance, quality, professionalism and appeal) and which is regularly adapted to their changing needs.
In order to revamp the contents of these courses, Careum has developed a module-based curriculum that will make an innovative and trendsetting contribution to education in the healthcare sector. The related methodologically didactical concept known as problem-based learning requires a new learning environment. By completely rebuilding the Foundation’s training centre, Careum is laying the foundations for such an environment. In so doing, it is creating a training centre for healthcare professions in the immediate vicinity of the university, the university hospital and, in an interprofessional capacity, the medical faculty.
