According to its articles of association, Careum’s goal is as follows:
“The Foundation aims to promote basic and advanced training schemes for the healthcare professions.”
To this end, Careum may hold shares – either directly or indirectly – in one or more institutions involved in education in the healthcare sector, or it may back such an institution.
In addition, the Foundation is actively involved in all areas of developing and expanding the educational basis, such as the development of courses and teaching aids specific to the healthcare professions.
Careum may also conduct or support basic research in the field of healthcare education.
The Careum Foundation aims to play an active role in ensuring the professionalism and attractiveness of healthcare education, thus making a significant contribution to a better, more efficient healthcare sector.

Originally known as the Zurich-Fluntern Red Cross Nursing School and Hospital (“Schwesternschule und Krankenhaus vom Roten Kreuz Zürich-Fluntern”), a foundation established in 1882, the Careum Foundation came into being on 1 January 2004.
